Render from Inside Unity where the landscape is integrated with the rest of the surrounding landscape.

Render from Houdini

Reference-picture

This was made with Houdini Heightfields (Old system based in SOP). I downloaded a TIF with height-data from the site and used the satelite-data already imported into Unity to match it up and make masks for the textures.

The mesh was separated into 3x3 tiles and got 4 LODs. LOD0 is a bit polyreduced from the original mesh since it was very heavy. Click on the pictures to get a bigger view and see the wireframes.

I used vertexcolors to make it easier to apply textures in the right places. For the final result I extracted different mask from the orthopphoto and projected them onto the mesh with different materials but this gave me a very good baseline to work with.
